LAIKIPIA, KENYA

04 / RESEARCH & EDUCATION

A landscape for learning.

Male is being developed as a living classroom — a place where students and researchers can learn from the realities of managing, restoring and building an economy around a working African landscape.

NORTH KENYA FIELD SCHOOL

Learning in the field.

Male is proud to host the North Kenya Field School (NKFS) and regular cohorts from the African Leadership University (ALU), which brings students to NKFS Kenya for intensive field-based learning.

ALU bootcamps take students across Laikipia's landscapes where conservation, ecology, livestock, communities and economics intersect. With restoration happening now, Male offers a place to observe, question and contribute to a landscape in transition.

A BUSH CAMPUS

A BUSH CAMPUS

A permanent bush campus.

A permanent bush campus.

Male and North Kenya Field School are working towards formalising Male as a long-term field landscape for ALU education and research. The ambition is simple: the conservancy becomes the classroom. The camp is open to others too: designed especially for education, research, community investment and meetings, it can also be booked at low cost by visitors.

Students can learn from restoration, wildlife, rangeland management, natural capital, tourism and the practical economics of conservation. Over time, student and research activity can contribute knowledge back into Male’s management.

North Kenya Field School bootcamps can use Male for immersive field learning: living in the landscape, studying real management questions and engaging directly with the challenges of conservation.

RESEARCH OVER TIME

RESEARCH OVER TIME

A landscape worth studying.

As Male changes, long-term research and monitoring can build a record of how soils, water, vegetation, wildlife and the economics of the landscape respond to different management decisions.
