Male lies in Laikipia, in the rangelands north of Nanyuki. Here, pastoralism, ranching, wildlife and conservation meet within one of Kenya’s most important wildlife regions.

Shaped by cattle.
Shaped by cattle.
Generations of pastoralism and livestock production have shaped Male. Cattle supported livelihoods and remain part of its story. Increasing grazing pressure, drought and climate variability have placed greater demands on soils and water, leaving the land less productive and less resilient and a new economic system is needed.

Making space for nature.
Male has begun to reduce pressure and rebuild ecological function: healthier soils, stronger grasslands, better water retention, recovering biodiversity and greater movement of wildlife. People and cattle remain part of this evolving working landscape but wildlife is now the priority.

Recovery takes time.
Recovery takes time.
Male is proudly at the beginning of a long-term experiment in restoration, not a finished conservation success story. Change will be observed, measured and learnt from over time, with the ambition of restoring ecological resilience while maintaining economic value for people connected to the land.
